Ulric Von Licktenstein VS Rupert

Jean de Montbergac VS Falstaf

Once more the day had come for the continuation of the Trial of Steel Tournament. With its dawn returned the crowds of excited townsfolk and nobles who had come to view the fighting abilities of tommorow's warriors. It was not a day of fine weather, however, as a thick layer of forebodingly dark clouds hung over the city of Parravon. The stormclouds did not dampen the spirits of those who still decided to join the festivities despite the brooding cloud cover. Although somewhat smaller than in previous rounds, the crowd still retained its jovial mood and all were ready to watch Round Five commence.

Once more the King's Herald and his attendant Scribe arrived in the King's personal alcove and as the Scribe readied himself to begin writing, the Herald gave a nod to the Adjudicator and told him to begin Round Five.

The 14 Squires who sat within the preparation building waited with anticipation for the names of the first two contestants to be called out, so that the battles could begin. Strangely, only a few of them had the same nervousness about them that most had shown in the beginning rounds. It seemed, at least, that some of them had claimed a newfound confidence in their fighting abilities.

The final seconds before the beginning of the first battle of Round Five seemed to drag on as the King's Adjudicator unrolled the scroll of parchment, read it over, and spoke...

"The first battle of Round Five shall be fought between Bobby Thundar, and Seretuon!" he announced. This caused the assembled people to roar out with cheers as the double doors to the preparation building opened to allow the two chosen Squires to enter the arena.

The signal was given and the battle commenced. Bobby Thundar closed the distance between himself and his foe quickly and attempted to find a weak spot in Seretuon's defenses. Both Squires stood poised to strike at the other, neither moving a muscle as they attempted to discern the right time to attack. Bobby Thundar was either extremely lucky or extremely skilled, as his first strike, in this case a well-aimed Chop, impacted heavily with the leg of his opponent. Unprepared for such a cunning blow to his leg, Seretuon could not help but collapse from the force of the strike.

With a single attack the battle had finished, and Bobby Thundar was the victor due to Knocking Over his opponent. Bobby Thundar receives 10 points for his efforts, whilst Seretuon receives no points.

After the surprised Bobby Thundar and the wounded Seretuon had left the arena and returned to the preparation arena, the Adjudicator unrolled the scroll of parchment once again and read aloud. "The next battle in Round Five, shall be fought between Aodhan of Greensleeves, and Chaliot deFray! May the Lady bless the victor!" Once more the chosen Squires marched onto the sand-covered arena floor and readied themselves for battle...

The battle began in a rush of sand, steel and shouts as Chaliot deFray Shoulder Charged at his opponent, aiming to bring his foe down in a single blow. As Chaliot's weapon came down upon him with brutal force, Aodhan of Greensleeves could do little to avoid the blow or defend himself against it. His only choice was to try to lessen the impact of the strike. Absorbing some of the force with his sword and shield, Aodhan failed to stop the blow and it hit him, but thankfully, the strike did not carry enough power behind it to wound. Stepping backwards, Aodhan Jabbed at his foe but found his stab blocked by his opponent's shield.

Now the battle was joined in earnest, with Chaliot lashing out once more at his foe, this time with a thrusting Jab that nearly hit, but was nimbly dodged by Aodhan. The Adroit Squire then delivered a Jab of his own, but Chaliot was a skilled defender and he easily parried the stab, before lashing back with a cunning Diversion strike. Unfortunately for Chaliot deFray, Aodhan was able to jump out of the way before it could hit.

Pressing the attack, the normally defensive Chaliot stepped forward and brutally attacked Aodhan of Greensleeves with a Double Strike. The attack was aimed to bring his foe down, but Aodhan parried the Double Strike, pushed his opponent's sword aside and stabbed forward with a Jab of his own directed at the unprotected belly of Chaliot. Unable to defend himself now, Chaliot was hit and suffered the full force of the blow directed at his stomach. Luckily for Chaliot deFray, the Jab failed to wound. Aodhan attempted to capitalize on the hit he had just caused with another attack, this time a heavy-handed Power Strike, but missed. Chaliot deFray, already recovering from the Jab, delivered a Jab of his own, but he was off target and failed to hit.

The onlookers excitedly applauded as Aodhan dodged aside, avoiding another Double Strike from Chaliot, before countering with an attack of his own. Slashing out, Aodhan hit Chaliot across the chest with stunning force and pushed him backwards. Stunned and surprised, Chaliot deFray was unable to reply to his foe's attack, and was forced to spend a few moments recovering from the palpable blow.

Aodhan of Greensleeves, who was not going to attack whilst his foe was defenseless, waited for Chaliot to recover from his stun and regain his composure before thrusting out with a Jab. Side-stepping the Jab and avoiding it, Chaliot deFray sliced out with a Chop. Aodhan then parried the attack, before Slashing back but finding his own attack blocked by Chaliot's shield! For the final attack of the battle, Chaliot deFray attempted to Shoulder Charge and bring his opponent down, but Aodhan was too swift and evaded the charging swipe.

Calling an end to the battle, the King's Adjudicator called the Squires to cease combat before announcing the victor. Aodhan of Greensleeves had won by having 1 More Hit than his opponent. Because of this, Aodhan of Greensleeves receives 6 points. Chaliot deFray receives 4 points.

"Next, Jedjo Armag must do battle against Curtis Pythoheart. Squires, approach!" called out the Adjudicator's voice, summoning the two Squires from the preparation building. The doors swung open once more, and out marched Jedjo Armag and Curtis Pythonheart, who were greated with applause and loud cheers.

As the Squires took up their position in the centre of the arena, the battle was set to begin...

With the signal to commence given, Curtis immediately began the combat by charging headlong at his opponent and delivering a swirling Spin-Slash attack. Even though he was Adroit, Jedjo was unprepared for such a vicious attack and was hit with disabling force in the chest, both weakening him and injuring him badly. Jedjo Armag, who attacked back with a Spin-Slash of his own, was too weakened by the blow he had suffered and missed. Launching a hail of blows, Curtis struck out with two Chops and a Spin-Slash but was unable to find his mark. The only blow that came close to hitting was his second Chop. Unfortunately for Curtis, Jedjo parried this attack and struck back with a Jab, but also missed.

Yelling out in anger, Curtis Pythonheart Shoulder Charged into his opponent and his blow found its mark, smashing past Jedjo's guard. Jedjo was not easily wounded, however, and despite the considerable strength behind the attack, was unharmed. Jedjo then counter attacked with a Lunge, but Curtis dodged aside and was not hit.

Finally managing to cause a hit on his opponent, Jedjo Armag dodged under another Spin-Slash from Curtis before hacking at him with a Chop. The sweeping attack did hit, but failed to cause any harm to Curtis. Angered by being hit, Curtis Pythonheart Shoulder Charged at his foe once more. Dodging aside, Jedjo evaded the heavy-handed strike and allowed Curtis to charge past.

Not letting up for a moment, Curtis quickly changed direction and was within striking distance of Jedjo in seconds. Spin-Slashing at his foe, Curtis was once again unable to hit his opponent. Jedjo Armag, on the other hand, was able to strike Curtis once more, this time with a Chopping blow. Again, Jedjo was unable to cause any harm with his strike. Stepping forward and continuing the withering storm of attacks, Curtis Pythonheart struck out with a Chop and a Jab, but yet again did not hit. The Chop was inaccurate and missed, whilst the Jab was parried. Counter attacking after pushing his foe's weapon aside, Jedjo Chopped once more and his attack slipped past Curtis's guard and hit. Once more, however, he was unsuccessful in causing any harm to his opponent. Becoming enraged now, Curtis roared as he struck out with a Spin-Slash, but again missed, much to his chagrin.

Curtis, who was starting to lose it, charged angrily towards his opponent, intent on delivering a harsh Shoulder Charge. The charging attack hit with jarring force and caused Jedjo a palpable wound. The force of the blow knocked Jedjo backwards and brushed his Spin-Slash attack harmlessly to the side.

As Turn 6 began (both Squires had the same amount of Hits), Curtis Pythonheart stepped forward and Chopped brutally at his foe and hit. Jedjo was not going to go down easily however and was not hurt, even by this powerful blow. Ignoring the Chop, Jedjo Armag Shoulder Charged directly into his opponent and delt a crushing blow to his opponent (causing 2 Wounds!). Dazed by the impact of the attack, Curtis struck back at his foe, but two Spin-Slashes and a Chop later, he had still yet to find his target.

Turn 7 began (both Squires still had the same amount of Hits) with Curtis, who was now looking angry but exhausted, Chopping at his foe but missing. Jedjo replied with a well-aimed Chop but in a rare example of his defensive skill, Curtis parried the incoming blow. In the dying seconds of the battle, Curtis Pythonheart hacked out with a powerful Spin-Slash. His aim was true and the blow hit and caused Jedjo to flinch, but no more damage was caused. Lastly, a further Spin-Slash and final, exhausted Shoulder Charge were both inaccurate, and missed.

As Curtis dropped to his knees to rest and Jedjo stabbed his sword into the sand in frustration, the Adjudicator announced the winner. Curtis Pythonheart had been victorious by having 1 More Hit than his foe. Curtis Pythonheart gains 6 points, Jedjo Armag gains 4 points.

After the gruelling battle between Jedjo Armag and Curtis Pythonheart, the lunchtime hour arrived once more. The spectators happily left their seats to take part in the festivities happening outside the arena. Few cared that the low rumble of thunder could be heard in the distance, or that a chill had taken to the air. Most were happy to enjoy the mead and bread on offer, and to view the wonderous feats that the entertainers performed.

When the festivities had finished, there was a feel in the air that told all present that rain would soon begin. Many of the peasant-folk, whom had work to do in preparation for the coming storm, were unable to return to the pavilions to continue watching the battles take place. Those who did return to the pavilions soon banished thoughts of storm and thunder from their minds, and settled down to watch the next combat.

"Next, in the fourth battle of Round Five, Pierre de Gisoreux shall do battle against Ryant de Cooke II!" Called out the Adjudicator. As the stormclouds brooded overhead and the noise of the cheering crowd filled the air, the two Squires entered the arena and readied themselves for combat.

As soon as the melee began it became clear that these two Squires were evenly matched and both skilled. Pierre Slashed at Ryant but found his attack parried by his nimble opponent, who replied with a fierce Jab attack, but was blocked by the shield of Pierre! Striking with lightning speed and accuracy, Pierre de Gisoreux Chopped at his foe, slipping past Ryant's guard and impacting on his shoulder, but the hit was too weak and failed to cause any injuries to the limb. Ryant, ignoring the hit, stabbed out at his foe with a Jab, which pummeled into Pierre's chest and hit with such force that the Squire was momentarily stunned.

Striking once more, Ryant de Cooke II sliced out at his opponent with a Spin-Slash, but Pierre dodged backwards and was able to get out of the way of the blow. Attempting to reply to the Spin-Slash, Pierre de Gisoreux was unable to aim his Chop correctly and failed to hit, instead his blade sliced through the air inches to Ryant's right. Pierre de Gisoreux was able to avoid Ryant de Cooke II's counter attacking Lunge, and was not hit.

Pierre de Gisoreux, unable to evade Ryant's further attack, was hit by a skillful Jab from his foe. Luckily for the Average Squire, the blow did not cause any physical harm. Seeing his opponent turn to flee, Ryant de Cooke II was momentarily confused by this puzzling action, and let up his guard for a moment. This was all Pierre needed to strike a devastating spinning blow upon the leg of his opponent. The Subterfuge attack hit with disabling force, but Ryant was not knocked down. Attacking once more, Pierre swung a mighty Power Strike at his opponent which Ryant dodged despite his wounded leg and was not hit. Ryant then struck back with a Power Strike of his own, and he found his mark with crushing force. The impact of the blow caused an obvious wound to Pierre, who clutched at his injured chest.

Attempting to retreat in earnest now, Pierre took a step backwards and Jabbed out defensively at his opponent. Unfortunately for the newly wounded Squire, the attack missed. Ryant de Cooke II, seeing a chance to attack, Jabbed at his foe but Pierre was ready for the stab and parried it. Heaving his sword into the air, Pierre roared with the effort as he brought it down in a sweeping, double-handed Power Strike. Ryant was no fool however, and avoided the blow easily. Ryant de Cooke II, realising that he had a chance to win the battle then and there, hammered into his foe with a might Shoulder Charge attack. The blow hit with such force that Pierre was unable to defend himself and was sent flying, hitting the sand with a dull thud. When the dust settled, he lay unconsious.

Ryant de Cooke II was the victor. He had won by Knocking Out his opponent. Due to this, Ryant de Cooke II gains 10 points, whilst his foe, Pierre de Gisoreux, gains no points.

The stormclouds above growled menacingly as the King's Adjudicator read aloud once more, "Next, Ulric Von Licktenstein shall do battle against the current Roster leader, Rupert, Squire to Baron Borsam!". The onlookers looked on with excitement, as the Roster leader and one of the crowd favourites entered the arena. In a flourish of sword and shield they readied themselves for battle...

Leaping forward, Ulric struck first, Jabbing at his foe's mid-section. Rupert was too quick however, and he managed to raise his shield to block the incoming stab. Striking back, Rupert hacked out at his opposition with a Chop and hit his Reckless foe hard, dazing him momentarily. Taking advantage of the stunned state of his opponent, Rupert Chopped once more, and although he did managed to force his foe backwards, Ulric managed to parry the strike despite his stun. Recovering from the blow, Ulric Von Licktenstein dodged aside in time to avoid a Double Strike from his opponent, and Chopped back twice. Rupert was not fazed however, and evaded the first. He was not so lucky with the second Chop, however, and was hit, but not wounded.

Rupert, stepped backwards but still within striking range of his opponent, lifted his sword to Chop at his foe. This action was interrupted, however, when Ulric retreated a few paces and then sped forward in an all-out Shoulder Charge! Abandoning his Chop attack, Rupert jumped aside just in time to avoid his opponent's sweeping attack. He could feel the air move as the blade sped past his head. Slashing at his opponent whilst he was recovering from his charge, Rupert hit his foe but did not manage to cause any real damage to Ulric Von Licktenstein. Trying to put more power behind his blows, Rupert struck out with a Spin-Slash, but was inaccurate and missed.

The battle had just begun and already the citizens in the pavilions were roaring and yelling with excitement and anticipation. Even the Herald watched with interest as the two Squires duelled in an intense test of skills. Looking up only occasionally, the Scribe hurriedly wrote on the parchment, recording onto its surface everything the Herald told him to write.

Attacking once more, Rupert was constantly moving and striking from new angles, first from the left, then the right. Slicing at his opponent with a deft Slash, Rupert struck Ulric once more, but yet again it was only a glancing blow, and failed to hurt the Reckless Squire. Replying with a Chop attack, Ulric Von Licktenstein's aim was not true and his blow went wide. Dodging a not-so-successful Diversion from Rupert, Ulric attempted to overrun his opponent with another Shoulder Charge. As before, however, Rupert was too swift and dodged the mighty blow. Somewhat startled by the ferocity of his opponent's attack, Rupert, despite not being hit, was still effected enough to miss with his Double Strike counter.

Twisting to the side to avoid a Spin-Slash from his Aggressive opponent, Ulric Chopped once more at the Squire to Baron Borsam but was unlucky, and missed. It appeared that neither Squire could better his adversary now, as Ulric evaded another Double Strike from his foe, only to find his next Chopping strike harmlessly missing his opponent! Rupert Slashed at Ulric, but his Reckless foe was ready and parried the Slash with a flick of his wrist. Finally, a Lunging attack followed by a Jab from Ulric failed to acheive any hits, as Rupert was skillfully evading the incoming blows.

Locked in a heated conflict, the Squires battled on. A Chop from Rupert was deflected off the side of the shield of Ulric, who counter attacked with a hastily aimed Chop, which unfortunately missed. Striking once more, Rupert was more successful with a Spin-Slash and scored a hit on his opponent, but failed to put enough force behind the attack to cause any harm. The same could not be said for Ulric's next attack, a sweeping Chop which hit Rupert just below the shoulder blade and cause a great deal of harm to that area, leaving an obvious wound. Angered, Rupert struck back with a Chop of his own and impacted heavily with the chest of his foe, who staggered backwards from the force of the wound that had been caused on him. Neither Squire was ready to continue fighting, and although Ulric attempted to strike out with a Lunge and a Shoulder Charge, neither attack had enough force or speed behind it to hit.

Luckily for both Squires, it was the end of the battle. Half of the crowd cheered with joy as the other half muttered disappointedly as Rupert, Squire to Baron Borsam was declared victor by having 3 More Hits than Ulric Von Licktenstein. Rupert, Squire to Baron Borsam gains 7 points, whilst his opponent, Ulric Von Licktenstein, gains 3 points.

"Ryanus Caeruleus Coquus shall be pitted against Thomas, Squire to Baron Borsam. Enter, Squires, and do battle!" Again the crowd burst into cheers as the two Squires marched, shoulder to shoulder, onto the centre of the arena, before drawing their swords. With a nod from the Herald, the battle began...

Not wasting a second, Ryanus immediately attacked his opponent, Lunging and attempting to bring his foe down with one sweeping slice of his blade. Thomas dodged aside, avoiding the blow and pretended to attack back, but it was only a Feint. Flinching, Ryanus was fooled by the Feinted attack and responded by attempting to Deflect. Being Reckless, however, he was all too ready to let up his guard to give chase when Thomas turned to retreat. Unfortunately for Ryanus, Thomas had used Subterfuge to get his opponent where he wanted him, and spun around, delivering a harsh blow to his opponent. The hit caused a palpable wound to the Reckless Squire, who tried to hit back with a Double Strike and a Spin-Slash, but failed.

Dodging under a clumsy Slash from Ryanus, Thomas grasped his weapon in both hands and struck back with a mighty Power Strike. Ryanus was expecting such an attack from his adversary, however, and jumped backwards, avoiding the crushing blow. Angered, Ryanus used a Spin-Slash followed by a Double Strike, but both were inaccurate and missed. Flustered by his opponent's skill at avoided his blows, Ryanus decided to let his enemy come to him and retreated so that his back was to the wooden fence and took a Deflection stance.

When Thomas came close enough to strike, Ryanus lashed out with a Spin-Slash and finally managed to score a hit upon his opponent. The Spin-Slash slipped past the defenses of Thomas and impact with his chest, but failed to cause any real wounds beyond some small bruises. Thomas pressed onwards and locked blades with his opponent in a Clash of Steel. Both Squires put all of their might behind their blades in an attempt to force their opponent off guard, but it was Thomas who succeeded, pushing his foe up against the fence with enough force to cause him to lose his balance and fall against its wooden planks. Striking once more, Thomas Chopped the elbow of his opponent and hit with jarring force, causing Ryanus's arm to weaken greatly. Regaining his balance, Ryanus struck back with a Double Strike and a Chop. The former was evaded by Thomas and the latter was deflected off the Average Squire's shield.

Stepping backwards, Thomas evaded another Double Strike from his foe and Chopped back twice. With his back to the fence, Ryanus was unable to escape the first attack and was hit, but took the force of the blow well and was not hurt. The second attack was parried by the defenses of Ryanus, who pushed his foe's blade aside and struck back three times, attempting to force his opponent backwards with sheer quantity of attacks. He hailed attacks upon his foe in the form of a Lunge, a Double Strike and a Slash. Although he did force his opponent backwards, he failed to cause any hits. In response to these blows, Thomas dodged the Lunge, stepped backwards to avoid the Double Strike and parried the Slash.

With the cheers of the crowd growing even louder, Thomas, Squire to Baron Borsam attempted to fool his opponent with a Feinted slash attack. The trick worked, as Ryanus Caeruleus Coquus took a Deflection stance in reaction to the Feint. Unfortunately for Thomas, Ryanus realised that he had been tricked and Slashed out at his foe before Thomas could capitalize on his Feint. The attack was successful and hit Thomas, but the wounded arm of Ryanus could not put enough force behind the Slash and failed to cause any physical harm. Chopping back at his opponent, Thomas scored a glancing hit upon his foe but failed to harm him. With two skillful strikes, Ryanus struck with a Double Strike followed by a Lunge and hit, and got past the guard of his opponent, with both. The former strike hit his opponent with a harsh crunch across the side, causing injury. The latter strike, although hitting, failed to cause any further harm.

As the 6th and final Turn began (both Squires had the same amount of hits) both Squires showed signs of exhaustion. With a Power Strike from Thomas, a Slash from Ryanus and then two Spin-Slashes from Ryanus all failing to find their targets. Finally, the last attack of the battle, a Slash from Ryanus, slipped past his exhausted foe's guard and hit, but failed to wound.

The long and brutal battle was over, Ryanus Caeruleus Coquus had won by having 1 More Hit than his opponent. Ryanus Caeruleus Coquus gains 6 points, whilst Thomas, Squire to Baron Borsam gains 4 points.

"For the final battle of Round Five, Jean de Montbergac shall do battle against Falstaf Doutreive Cunningmare XVII. May the Lady bless them both!" announced the Adjudicator. The clouds above had grown darker and rumbled menacingly, already strong winds could be felt on the air, and rain was not far off.

Despite all this, the final battle must take place. Thus, Jean and Falstaf made their way to the centre of the arena, and the battle began...

Planting his feet into the sand and raising his sword defensively, Jean readied himself to Deflect any incoming attacks. Falstaf jumped forward and Slashed with lightning speed, but his aim was off and the Slashing attack went wide. With a palpable overhead Power Strike, Jean de Montbergac brought his blade down in an impressive arc. The swing was too quick for Falstaf to avoid and he was hit on the leg with disabling force, causing him to slow noticably and also causing a serious injury. Angered, Falstaf Slashed back at his opponent and hit, but did not have enough power behind the attack to cause any harm.

Falstaf Doutreive Cunningmare XVII evaded his opponent, avoiding a skillful attempt to lock blades in a Clash of Steel. Trying to keep Jean at bay, Falstaf lashed out with another Slash, but this attack was parried and pushed harmlessly aside, before being replied to with a Shoulder Charge from Jean. Jean de Montbergac's crushing blow missed by a whisker, but that was all Falstaf needed to escape the charging swipe and strike back with an attack of his own. Slashing forth, Falstaf hit his foe in the chest with stunning force.

Stabbing at the left leg of his opponent, Falstaf Jabbed with expert skill and struck a disabling blow to the limb. Struggling to stay on his feet after suffering the powerful wound to his leg, Jean's Shoulder Charge failed miserably and had no effect on his opponent, who promptly Slashed back and hit Jean across the shoulder.

Again Falstaf's blade stabbed Jean de Montbergac with skillful thrusts. This time the Jab failed to cause any harm, but did cause Jean to raise his weapon in an attempt to Deflect incoming attacks. Without waiting for his opponent to strike, however, Jean abandoned his Deflection-style stance and instead Slashed at his foe, hitting with a glancing blow off his opponent, doing no harm. With yet another Slash, Falstaf hit his opponent once more. Yet again the attack was not powerful enough to wound. The attack did manage to disrupt a Power Strike from Jean, and caused it to miss.

In the 5th and final Turn, Jean de Montbergac ended the battle with a single, mighty blow. Shoulder Charging into his foe, Jean hit Falstaf with all of the strength he could muster directly to his opponent's chest. The blow was accurate and smashed through the defenses of Falstaf, and casued such a great wound (doing 2 Wounds!) that it knocked Falstaf out cold!

As the crowd cheered excitedly at the end of the final battle of Round Five, the King's Adjudicator declared Jean de Montbergac the winner by Knocking Out his opponent. Jean de Montbergac gains 10 points. Falstaf Doutreive Cunningmare XVII gains no points.

The noise of trumpets blaring filled the arena, announcing the end of Round Five. The King's Herald stood up from his chair and spoke in a loud and commanding voice "Squires of Bretonnia, approach!" To this the double doors of the preparation building swung open and the remaining Squires marched onto the centre of the arena in unison. Many of them sported recent injuries from the battles of the round.

"We have come to the half-way point in the Tournament, five rounds have passed and five rounds are to come. Those of you who have been deemed fit to continue shall take place in Round Six in one week's time. Not all of you will be able to continue, however.
