A four-way junction

In the darkness you find yourself stumbling out into a small room serving as an intersection of passages that provide you with no hint as to where you should now go. In one corner you can see a small pile of debris, some fallen stone and a curious hole that has been dug into the wall. The hole is large enough for you to reach into, but although it is dark you can see that something has been placed within.
