The Battle At Berg Point

Sir Gindle had finally found the location of a holy tome that was lost three hundred years ago. It was a treasure to Bretonnia and Sir Gindle had been searching for it for about six months, he had gathered its location from many different sources and finally knew where it was, an old abandoned barracks in northern Bretonnia. How it got there was anyone's guess. Little did Sir Gindle know someone else was after it too...

Adolf shifted the weight of his Greatsword strapped to his back, he had traveled from Altdorf and was almost upon his destination. The Imperial Museum was aftr unique tomes and artifacts and would no doubt pay very handsomely for them. Adolf knew exactly were one was, too. He just hoped that noneone else got to the old barracks before him...

The two forces spotted each other about four hundred metres from the barracks, they readied they weapons and the fight for the holy tome began!

This was a battle between Bretonnia(me) and the Empire(opponent), we played a Capture game.

My army was:

- Paladin General with Lance, Sword Of Might, Shield, Heavy Armour, Barded Warhorse and Mithril Great Helm.

- Paladin Battle Standard Bearer(BSB) with Lance, Hand Weapon, Shield, Heavy Armour, arded Warhorse and with Valourous Standard.

- Damsel Of The Lady with Hand Weapon, Warhorse and Holy Icon. I chose Heavens and got Comet Of Casandora!!!

- 15 Halberdiers with Halberds, Light Armour and full command.

- 15 Spearmen with Light Armour, Shields, Spears and full command.

- 9 Knights Of The Realm with Standard Bearer, led by my Paladin General.

The Empire's army was:

- Captain General with Great Weapon, Pistol, Heavy Armour and Ring Of Volans. The Ring held (At power level 6) the Metal Spell of Transmutation Of Lead.

- Captain with Spear, Crossbow and Armour Of Faith

- Battle Wizard with Lvl 2 Upgrade and Grey Wand. My opponent chose Light and got Burning Gaze and Guardian Light.

- 20 Mercanary Orc Boyz with Additional Hand Weapons and Boss.

- 15 Spearmen with Shields, Light Armour and Spears.

- 18 Swordsmen with Light Armour, Shields, Hand Weapons, Standard Bearer and Musician.

- 16 Handgunners with Light Armour and Handguns.

THE BOARD:

The board as set up with a plain area on the northern side, with just a small clump of trees to the right. The southern half was heavily wooded. The objective was the burnt out house that you get in the Warhammer box.

DEPLOYMENT:
I won the roll to select table side and chose the open plain on the north. My opponent got the south side.

My Knights set up on the left of my deployment zone, with the Damsel to the right of them and my two units of foot troops to the left of her.

The Empire's Swordsmen were set up next to the Orcs in the main clearing in the forest (Trees were on either side but it was clear there) while the Spearmen were forced to set up were they would have to make their way through the forest. The Handgunners were set up behind the main battleline.

The Spear Captain (This is what I call the Captain with the spear) was set up next to the Battle Wizard, he would act as a bodyguard.

The General was put in the front line with the Swordsmen. He wanted revenge for what happened last time (I ran him through with my General's lance on the first turn of combat!).

I won the roll for who goes first with a 2, my opponent rolled a 1! I took the blessing and my opponent chose to go first.

EMPIRE TURN 1:

The Empire Spearmen made their way through the forest, they only got half way. The Orcs and Swordmen (And General) marched towards the Objective House, with the Spear Captain, Handgunners and Wizard following behind. The Handgunners now were in range (although for the moment their sight was blocked by Orcs and Swordsmen) for shooting at anyone near the Objective House.

No Magic, Shooting or Combat.

BRETONNIA TURN 1:

My line moved towards the Objective House, my Knights made it within 12" of the Swordsmen. My BSB took cover behind the Objective House. The Damsel moved forward a little.

My Damsel cast Comet Of Casandora with 2d6, and rolled two 6s! That'll mean it cannot be dispelled this turn! I placed the marker in the middle of the Handgunners.

No Shooting, I had no bows! No Combat.

EMPIRE TURN 2:

Another Comet marker is added. The small dot in the sky grows larger...

The Swordsmen braced themselves for the charge, there was no way they could escape a Knightly charge. The Orcs moved themselves round for a flank charge after I charged. The Spearmen emerged from the forest, ready for battle.

The Wizard and Spear Captain moved around the back of the Orcs.

The Wizard failed to cast Guardian Light!

The Handgunners opened fire and a freaky thing happened, 6 of them failed because of the Blessing but 1 hit and killed a Knight! Just like in the last game!!!

No Combat.

BRETONNIA TURN 2:

Another Comet marker is added. The large dot in the sky grows huge...

My General and the KotR charged into both the Orc and the Swordsmen, I challenged the enemy General and, like last time, he accepted.

The Spearmen and Halberdiers moved up to the Objective House and the BSB joined them, they were going towards the Orc's flanks.

No Magic or Shooting.

My General's lance digs into the enemy General, but the foe lives! He attacks back but my armour turns it aside, my horse misses. One Orc and Two Swordsmen die in combat. The return attacks do no damage!

EMPIRE TURN 3:

The Huge Comet crashes to the earth! 12" around the Handgunners is smashed by the heavenly rock. Every unit, friend or foe, in this radius is hit by a powerful blast!

7 Handgunners, 4 Swordsmen, 2 Knights Of The Realm, 2 Orcs and 6 Empire Spearmen die in a massive earthquake and magical explosion. Nobody runs though.

The Spear Captain and Wizard stay still, ready to counter any flank charges on the Orcs. The Empire Spearmen move towards the Halberdiers.

The Ring Of Volans flashes and the Transmutation of Lead is cast on the KotR, but dispelled by my Damsel.

The Spear Captain fires at my Spearmen, but the bolt is deflected off my men's shields and light armour.

The epic battle of the Generals continues, no wounds are caused either way, with a lucky horse strike being deflected by heavy armour and the only Greatsword swing that hit was saved by a re-rolled armour save.

No deaths in the conflicts across the battlefield.

BRETONNIA TURN 3:

The BSB charges the Spear Captain while the Spearmen charge the Orcs in the flank. The Halberdiers move towards the Empire Spearmen.

A dismal 3 sees my Damsel fail to cast Comet Of Casandora.

2 wounding hits, one from my horse, one from my General see the enemy General crushed under a hail of blows. 1 Swordsman dies by a horse's kick, 2 Orcs and a Spearman perish in combat. The BSB's lance wounds the Spear Captain who cannot get through the Paladin's tough armour.

Both the Orcs and the Swordsmen run! They are all run down and the chase carries the KotR into the Handgunners! The Swordsmen banner is captured! Way to go!

EMPIRE TURN 4:

A roll of 2 sees another turn happen.

With a roar the Empire Spearmen charged, all hope of winning was not gone from their hearts. The Wizard charged my BSB, trying to at least bring him down, even if they don't win the game.

No Magic Or Shooting.

One Halberdier dies from the jab of a Empire spear, one Empire Spearman is cut down by a Bretonnian Halberd. The Spear Captain's attacks bounced off the Battle Standard Bearer's armour, the Wizard attacked but missed, and was hacked twice by the BSB and trampled by the horse.

5 Handgunners die under the Knightly charge, they do no damage in return.

The Handgunners flee and are killed in the chase, the chase takes the KotR and my General off the table! The Empire Spearmen flee and nearly make it off the table.

BRETONNIA TURN 4:

The Halberdiers and Spearmen back up to the Objective House. The KotR and my General arrive back on the board after their overzealous chase of the unlucky Handgunners.

No Shooting or Magic.

The Spear Captain's attacks fail to wound and the BSB finally kills the Spear Captain with one quick stab.

A roll of 5 means the game continues.

EMPIRE TURN 5:

The Empire Spearmen rally. The situation looks grim for them though, with only 6 of their number left and over 30 enemies just out of charge range!

No other Empire troops are left on the board, so no Combat, Magic or Shooting!

BRETONNIA TURN 5:

The KotR move over to the Objective House.

No other actions.

A roll of 1 means the game ends!!!

THE END OF THE BATTLE:

Bretonnia wins with 14 Halberdiers, the BSB(he dosn't count though) 14 Spearmen within 2" of the Objective House. Bretonnia also had 6 KotR and a Paladin General within 4" of the Objective House.

The closest thing the Empire had was 6 Spearmen that were 12" away from the Objective!

Bretonnian VPs: 1202
Empire VPs: 0
Bretonnian Deaths: 5
Empire Deaths: 67
Bretonnian Survivors: 37
Empire Survivors: 6

I think that my opponent played pretty well, although I think the Empire Ravening Hordes list (which he was still using) is very weak compared to the Bretonnian Warhammer Annual list (which I am still using).

I'm not going to brag, because my win was only so big because my opponent didn't have any Cannons and wasn't able to fully use his Handgunners. Plus too the Comet of Casandora smashed apart his Spearmen unit and almost halved the number of his Handgunners.

Johann looked around, the Bretonnians had claimed the barracks and were looking for the tome within. The battle had been short and bloody, with only Johann who was the captain of the spearmen and a handful of his men left alive. "Fall back men, we have no hope of getting the tome now, best save our skins whilst we still can, but by Sigmar these wretches will pay, but later..." Johann fell silent as he and his men slunk back out of view...
