The Wardens of The Oak

The Wardens of The Oak are a newly formed order of various Knights that specialise in many different kinds of warfare. Some of the Wardens of The Oak's duties include the rescue of important Dukes and Paladins from the clutches of evil armies when such noble characters fall into enemy hands. Some of their other duties are forest patrols and mobile warfare.

The leader of the Wardens of The Oak is the young but wise Sir Constantine le Griffon, who is both an expert tactician and couragous warrior. Although his career so far has been short, the noble Sir Constantine has gained a name for himself amongst the peasant-folk. He is even the subject of a ballad titled "The Claws of le Griffon", which chronicles Sir Constantine's rescue of a Grail Chapel's retinue of Damsels about to be devoured by the Orcish Wicked Spear tribe. On that day every Orc in the entire tribe was killed or routed, and not one Damsel's hair was touched by their foul presence.

Gordian le Sentinelle is the Battle Standard Bearer of the Wardens of The Oak. He is an expert as Forest Survival and was the chief instructor to the Foresters before Sir Constantine allowed Gordian to carry the Battle Standard into combat. Gordian is also an archer of no small skill. He does not use such weapons in combat but still regularly trains with the Foresters to keep his skills sharp. Some say that Gordian's inspiration for Archery came from tales of the mythical Wood Elves who dwell in Loren Forest that he was told as a child. Whether this is true or just rumours is yet to be discovered.

Lady Allianna was one of the Damsels saved by Sir Constantine during the epic battle between the Wardens of The Oak and the Wicked Spear tribe of Orcs. She is Sir Gindle's brother's daughter and had always dreamed of travelling with a valiant Knight across Bretonnia. Her chance arrived during the great battle between the Orcs and the valourous Knights. Once she had witnessed Sir Constantine's noble actions she decided to travel with him to right wrongs by his side and help him bring justice to the world. She has journeyed with the Wardens of The Oak ever since.

Nikkie la Licorne has been for many years, and still is, a trusted friend of Sir Constantine. Nikkie la Licorne possesses an amazing talent for weaving the forces of Hysh magic (commonly known as Light magic) and although she is just beginning her training, she is already the equal of many learned wizards of the world. Upon hearing of Sir Constantine le Griffon's battle against the Orcs of the Wicked Spear tribe she decided that her skills with the arcane were advanced enough that she could help save lives and aid Sir Constantine in his quests. Thus, she decided to join her friend in his travels. Already she has saved many innocents with her abilities, and many evils have been vanquished with her aid.

Due to the questing nature of the Wardens of The Oak, many Knights Errant have joined them hoping to earn glory and fame fighting for justice and honour. Many of these young Knights stay with the Wardens of The Oak and grow into strong, skilled fighters who proudly go to war in Bretonnia's name as Knights of the Realm. The Knights Errant are currently led by a talented Knight by the name of George le Vipere, George le Vipere is a relative of Gordian le Sentinelle, George one day hopes to ride a flying creature and bring justice upon the heads of the enemy from the skies. Another Knight of note, Tjalf le Lou, who proudly carries the Errantry Banner into battle. Never once has the Banner fallen from Tjalf's hands, never once have the grasp of the enemy touched the Banner's noble cloth whilst Tjalf protects it. He is young, strong and is known amongst his brothers-at-arms as a Knight whom is very altruistic. Tjalf is not a native of Bretonnia, he is instead from the Hochland province of the Empire. He is just as noble and skilled at arms as any Bretonnian Knight, however.

A force of Halberdiers follows Sir Constantine and the Wardens of the Oak. Hailing from the farming village of Montruese, the tale as to why these common men have joined the Wardens is one of horror and death, but also of light overcoming darkness. A nameless Vampire had arisen in Montruese, and the black-hearted fiend was of the Necrarch bloodline. His form was of a twisted, rotting corpse and his eyes were black pits that mirrored the darkness of his soul. Disappearances soon began in Montruese and the surrounding counrtyside. Fortunately for the people of the town, the Wardens of the Oak heard of the strange disappearances from refugees from Montruese who were heading to Parravon for safety.

Sir Constantine and his fellows heeded the pleadings of the refugees, who begged them to save their families, friends and homes from the restless dead who stalked the streets of Montruese at night. The Wardens immediately set out for Montruese and arrived at their destination within days. What they saw there chilled them to the bone. The sky was covered in thick layers of unnatural, dark cloud that blotted out the sun. Hordes of the dead crowded outside the gates to the town and at the head of the army of the Zombies, Skeletons and Ghouls stood the Necrarch Vampire. It was clear that the foul Vampire intended to lead his army of corpse-men to war.

Sir Constantine quickly held council with his most trusted friends and together, they created a most brilliant plan to destroy the evil Vampire once and for all. Charging with his Knights Errant and Gordian le Sentinelle at his side, Sir Constantine smashed into the enemy army head-on, and although they were few in number compared to the hordes of Zombies, many of the dead were put to rest in that first charge. Grinning, the Necrarch thought his foe to be a fool, and commanded his horde to swarm the Knights and kill them all. What he did not know, was that Sir Constantine's plan was not nearly so simple. While Lady Allianna sent a wave after wave of lethal magic at the Necrarch, and the Vampire turned his attention to deflect them, the knock-out blow swung into action. Nikkie la Licorne sent the strongest bolt of Light magic that she could muster into the clouds above. Punching through the cloud-cover, the beam dispelled the dark magic that had created the clouds and allowed the sunlight to shine upon the army of the dead. Unable to stand the purity of the light, the entire undead army, including the Necrarch, were immolated in seconds and destroyed by the sun's rays.

Many people who were still alive, but who were hiding, came out to greet their saviours. Many men had lost friends or family to the black-hearted Vampire, and all wished to ensure that creatures who commited such atrocities would be brought to justice before they were able to repeat what had happened to their town of Montruese. Thus, many of their number took up arms and joined the Wardens of the Oak. They are brave warriors, and they have aided Sir Constantine in thwarting evil more times than he can count.

The Foresters are an important unit in the Wardens of The Oak, led by their new instructor, Paul. These men form the unit known as the "Shaft of The Oak", whose job is on the battlefield to harry the enemy and spread panic amongst the ranks of the foe with hails of well-placed arrows which bring lightly armoured opponents down. When not on the battlefield, these Foresters train with their longbows and delve ever deeper into Bretonnia's forests, hoping to discover short-cuts or hidden paths through the woods to use against the enemy when the time comes for battle.
